This has been a busy and exciting year for DFN, with the charity expanding considerably.
In January Kate Yarrow took a team including her parents and a UK midwife to a remote far western district of Nepal (Kalikot
District) to undertake a healthcare needs assessment - looking at family planning use in the area. The findings highlight
the ongoing enormous problem of lack of access to basic healthcare. We found inconsistent use of family planning, resulting
in very large families. The impact of this on the families can be devastating, and we are looking at ways to further work
with the government and other NGO's in the future to address this problem.
We have now established a Doctors For Nepal scholarship with Patan Academy of Health Sciences
in Kathmandu, pledging to support at least one new full scholarship per year for a student from the most remote and poor districts
of Nepal. We are very pleased to announce the names of two new students we will be supporting
from this August. Nineteen year old Meena (F), from the remote district of Jumla, who is on a full DFN scholarship,
and 19 year old Nahakul (M) from the remote district of Kalikot. We wish them very good luck with their studies, and hope
that they will thrive in the medical school environment.
Lalit continues to excel at his medical studies and is about to sit his 4th year exams. We arevey excited
at the prospect of having our first doctor qualify next year, and are looking at ways to support his post-graduate life, in
particular focussing on healthcare projects in Kalikot district.
